Start of the Next Planning Phase for a New Rhine Bridge between Huningue and Basel

by Judith Lenhart

A new Rhine bridge between Huningue and Basel is a key element for cross-border mobility in the 3Land area. Starting in 2026, its technical, legal, and financial feasibility will be examined in depth to support informed decisions on the next planning steps. The studies will run for around three years and are supported by European funding (Interreg) and Switzerland’s New Regional Policy.

Strengthening cross-border mobility

In the 3Land area, located between Basel’s Dreirosen Bridge and the German-French Palmrain Bridge, national borders have long become permeable. Everyday life for many people naturally crosses borders, and the former industrial areas around the tri-border region hold significant potential for urban, transport, and open-space development. However, there is still a lack of efficient public transport access and a direct connection across the Rhine between France and Switzerland. A new Rhine bridge for trams or buses, as well as pedestrians and cyclists, is intended to fill this gap, shorten daily travel routes, further connect the region, and strengthen the ongoing development of 3Land.

Studies as a basis for the next steps

The project for a new Rhine bridge is now entering a crucial phase. Over the next three years, studies will examine the technical, legal, and financial requirements for constructing the infrastructure. These studies will provide the foundation for future political and planning decisions regarding the bridge and the associated tram or bus connection.

A European cooperation project

The “3Land – New Rhine Bridge” project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the European Union’s Interreg VI Upper Rhine programme, by the Swiss Confederation’s New Regional Policy (NRP), as well as by the Canton of Basel-Stadt, Saint-Louis Agglomération, the European Collectivity of Alsace, the city of Weil am Rhein, and the district of Lörrach. The total investment amounts to €900,000 for the years 2026–2028.
The cities of Saint-Louis and Huningue support the project as associated partners. The project is managed by the Trinational Eurodistrict Basel (TEB).

Context

The “3Land – New Rhine Bridge” project builds on more than ten years of successful trinational cooperation. Since 2011, the project partners have been developing an integrated district at the tri-border area under the “3Land” initiative.
