Presentation of the new Upper Rhine spatial concept

by Géraldine Lopez

Adopted by the Upper Rhine Conference on 16 May 2025, the Upper Rhine spatial concept marks a significant milestone in the territorial cooperation between France, Germany and Switzerland. This new strategic framework promotes a coherent, coordinated and sustainable approach to spatial planning in the trinational region.

A conference organized by the department of public works and transport of the Canton of Basel-Stadt on September 19 in Basel will bring together the main institutional and technical players in the area. The morning session will focus on presenting the spatial concept, in relation to the national planning policies of Baden-Württemberg (D), the Grand-Est region (F) and the Swiss confederation (CH).

The afternoon will be devoted to a tour of the 3Land project perimeter, which is an example of cross-border development between the cities of Basel, Huningue and Weil am Rhein. The program will conclude with a round-table discussion, which will bring together representatives from the three countries, as well as the project leaders, to debate the following question: is the cross-border territory prepared to face tomorrow’s challenges?

Conradin Cramer, President of the Basel-Stadt state council and President of the Upper Rhine Conference, will close the day by looking ahead to the next steps in trinational territorial cooperation in the region.
